What’s Happening in Spartanburg this Month?

 

January 1

 

YMCA Hair of the Dog Run (Tuesday January 1, 9:00 am-12:00 pm) Join us for the annual Hair of the Dog run at the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg. 9:00 AM start time and brunch to follow. Sign up early to save on the cost of registration! Register here

 

First Day Hike at Croft State Park-Foster Mill Loop  (Tuesday January 1, 10:00 am- 12:30 pm) Head to Croft State Park  for an invigorating 6 mile hike on the Foster Mill Loop Trail. Expect about 2.5 hours to complete, so bring water, good hiking shoes, and dress in layers. After the hike, there will be hot chocolate for all our participants at the Activity Center! The Local Hiker, from downtown Spartanburg, will lead the hike. FREE with park admission

 

First Day Hike at Croft State Park-Nature Trail (Tuesday January 1, 1:00 pm-2:00pm) Happy New Year! Let’s start your New Year’s resolution out on the right foot and hit a state park trail. Join a ranger at Croft State Park and hike the 1.5 mile nature trail. Meet at the activity center kiosk.

DIY Snowmen at Woodruff Library  (Wednesday, January 2, 2019, 10am – 6pm)  Make your own snowmen with supplies provided during the month of January.

Legos and More at Headquarters Library (Thursday, January 3, 2018, 3 – 4pm)  Drop in to build with Legos and other materials. (Ages 4-12)

 

Winter is “Snow” Much Fun Craft Time at Boiling Springs Library  (Thursday, January 3, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Winter is a great time to get inspired by nature. Come to the Boiling Springs library to create your own unique snowflakes.

 

Game Night at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Thursday, January 3, 2019, 6:30 – 7:30pm)  Join us for a game night at the Cyrill-Westside Library.

 

January 4

 

Slime Pop Up Camp at Spartanburg Science Center (Friday January 4, 9:00 am-12:00 pm) Looking for something fun to do in the New Year? Sign your kids up for our Slime Pop-Up Camp! We’ll be hosting 6-10 year olds on Friday, January 4th from 9am – 12pm. Space is limited and the cost is $45. Call the Science Center 864-583-2777 to register. More Information

 

Open Mic Night for High School Students at Hub City BookShop (Friday January 4, 7:00-8:00pm) Hub City Bookshop is hosting an open mic 7 p.m. the first Friday of every month for local high school students! Please bring up to three original pieces (no more than 3 minutes long). There will be a galley (free books!) give away to all participants.

 

Kids Class at Paint it Up! (Friday January 4, 6:00pm-8:00pm) Head to Paint it Up to paint a Pre-sketched penguin on 9×12 canvas. You choose your colors! Cost is $10  Register here

 

January 5

 

Build an Easel with Whiteboard at Home Depot  (Saturday January 5, 9am-12:00pm) Head to the nearest Home Depot for a hands-on workshop to build an easel. Your child can personalize the easel with paint and stickers. The activity is FREE and each child receives a certificate of achievement, an apron, and a pin while supplies last! Climb Upstate 2018 Rockin’ the New Year Bouldering Competition (Saturday January 5, 9:50 am-3:00 pm) Head to Climb Upstate for their 4th Annual Rockin’ the New YEAr Bouldering Competition. Ages 6+. Youth tickets $35| Adult Tickets $45. More info

 

Honey Bears Sensory Storytime at Headquarters Library  (Saturday, January 5, 2019, 10 – 11am)  Honey Bears – “A sensory experience with a lot of love.” Honey Bears meets the first Saturday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. For children birth to 12 years old. We merge a traditional storytime within a sensory learning enviornment. Our goal is to enhance sensory learning through reading, singing of songs, chants and rhymes along with interactive sensory play. This program will support families and build social connections in a safe, public setting.

 

Mini Makers Morning Out: Cool Science at Headquarters Library  (Saturday, January 5, 2019, 11am – 12pm)  Calling all Mini Makers. Join us for Mini Makers Morning Out, an educational and (sometimes) messy morning of making. Program is for school-aged kids ages 6-11 or grades 1-5. To register call 864-596-3505.

 

Storytime and Activities Featuring Clifford the Big Red Dog (Saturday January 05, 11:00 AM)  Clifford is an adorable dog whose well-meaning bumblings have great kid appeal especially for his owner, Emily Elizabeth. Join Barnes and Noble to read about everyone’s favorite big red dog.

 

January 6

Sundays Unplugged at Chapman Cultural Center (Sunday January 6, 1-5 pm) Chapman- Cultural Center is open every Sunday afternoon, 1-5 p.m., to provide casual and cultural experiences for those who want to “unplug.” Spartanburg Art Museum, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, The John F. Green Spartanburg Science Center and the Student Galleries are all open with free admission. In addition, one or more local musicians will perform a free mini-concert at no charge 2-4 p.m.

 

Greenville Swamp Rabbits Autism Awareness and Sensory Day (Sunday January 6, 3:00pm) Head to Bon Secours Wellness Arena for a Sensory Friendly Hockey game! There will be quiet sensory calming spaces available, reduced lights, flashing graphics and horns removed from central telecaster, and special autism awareness jerseys to be autographed and auctioned after the game. Co-Sponsored by Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health and The Advanced Institute for Development and Learning.

 

Piedmont Chamber Orchestra FREE Winter Concert (Sunday January 6, 3:00pm) Head to Southside Baptist Church on January 6 for a FREE concert by the Piedmont Chamber Orchestra! Piedmont Chamber Orchestra is a new and very unique orchestra that just started in Spartanburg! This orchestra will benefit the arts and music culture scene in Spartanburg and also provides music enrichment and mentoring opportunities for Spartanburg’s most talented youth musicians! Make sure to check it out!

Winter Wonderland at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Monday, January 7, 2019, 4:30 – 5:30pm)  Join us for fun snow crafts and activities!

 

Winter Perler Bead Creations at Inman Library (Monday, January 7, 2019, 3:30 – 4:30pm)  Join us to create winter perler bead designs. This program is open to kids ages 5-11.

Family Night Out: Bubble Bath Science at Headquarters Library  (Tuesday, January 8, 2019, 7 – 8pm)  Make play dough bubble baths and fight germs at the same time! Welcome families with children ages 0-9 years.

It’Snow Wonder We’re Having Fun! At Headquarters Library  (Wednesday, January 9, 2019, 10 – 11am)  Join us for a story about the first person to photograph individual snowflakes. Then we’ll make some snow, cut some snowflakes and even build an igloo.

 

Afterschool Explorers: Bubble Bath Science at Headquarters Library  (Wednesday, January 9, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Make play dough bubble bath and fight germs at the same time! Welcome children in grades 1-4.

 

Homeschool: Library Scavenger Hunt at Woodruff Library  (Wednesday, January 9, 2019, 1 – 2pm)  Think you know your library? Children 5k – 6th grade can participate in a scavenger hunt. Activities will be planned for each age group.

Little Sprouts’ Day Out (Birth – Age 3) at Headquarters Library (Friday, January 11, 2019, 11:30am – 12:30pm)  Welcome to Little Sprouts’! Where laughter is encouraged, wandering attention spans are doorways to discovery, and getting messy is always a possibility (an extra set of clothes are always welcome but not required). Created with the thought of kick starting parent-child conversations and strengthening bonds, our rotating activities always offer something new to explore. Ballpits, pumpkin boats and shaving cream sensory bins are just a few of the fun activities you may encounter. Occasionally a craft, finger play, or literacy tip is highlighted, but the program is primarily a free-for-all. If you have a child three or younger, we invite you to drop in any time during Little Sprouts’ to see just how fun and exciting early sensory play can be.

 

Snow Slime for Homeschoolers at Cowpens Library  (Thursday, January 10, 2019, 11am – 12pm)  Join us as we create our own snow slime and discover the science behind the process. We will also discuss winter weather and what causes snow to fall from our skies. This program is for ages 5k – 4th grades. Refreshments will be served.

 

January 11

 

Homeschool: Domino Day at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Friday, January 11, 2019, 1:30 – 2:30pm)  Join us for a day of building with dominos and other items to cause a domino chain reaction. We will have fun experiencing the domino effect and watching them all fall down. Sign up required.

 

January 12

Sensory Friendly Morning at TCMU Spartanburg (Saturday January 12, 9:00 am-10:30 am) Sensory Friendly Museum Days at TCMU-Spartanburg are designed for children with special sensory needs, sensory processing differences, and other special needs. Once a month, children will be encouraged to explore the museum, partake in programming, and engage with staff in an inclusive and comfortable environment. Bright lights will be dimmed throughout the museum, loud sounds from exhibits will be limited, smaller crowds, designated quiet/sensory break spaces.

 

Barnes and Noble Storytime Featuring Love, Z (Saturday January 12, 11:00 AM) A robot named Z discovers a message signed “Love, Beatrice,” and decides to find out what “love” means. They embark on an adventure that leads to Beatrice, and back home again, where love was hiding all along.

JCPenny Kids Zone at Westgate Mall (Saturday January 12, 11:00 am-12:00 pm) The Kids Zone has joined with Nickelodeon on Saturday, January 12. Bring your kids to JCPenney to create and color a 2019 kids calendar and stand. JCPenney Kids’ Zone lets school-age kids create fun arts & crafts projects every month. Kids will receive a collectible pin for every project they finish. Materials for crafts and activities will be provided. All kids must be accompanied by a parent. Plus just for parents—an extra 10% off coupon* for use in store only on the day of the event. Coupon can be combined with other coupons!

 

Baby & Me Storytime at Pacolet Library  (Saturday, January 12, 2019, 12:30 – 1:30pm)  A storytime just for you and your baby (children 3 years old and under) at Pacolet Branch Library.

 

Princess Skate at Skating on the Square Downtown Spartanburg  (Saturday, January 12, 2019, 2pm – 4pm)  Come dressed as your favorite princess, and skate with Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff from Disney’s Frozen!  All princesses will receive a free crown!

 

January 13

Family Fundays at Spartanburg Art Museum: Wax Resist Winter Landscapes (Sunday January 13, 1:00-4:00 pm-drop in) Join the SAM staff and instructor Mary Harris and learn basic cold wax resist techniques to create a winter wonderland landscape masterpiece! All materials and supplies are included. Family Fundays are drop-in workshops between 1-4pm. Workshop is located in the SAM 2D Studio, on the 2nd Floor of the East Wing, Chapman Cultural Center. $5

Homeschool Huddle For Kids: Sparkling Icicle Creations at Boiling Springs Library  (Monday, January 14, 2019, 2 – 3pm)  If you have ever wanted powers like Jack Frost or Elsa now is your chance. Create a sparkling icicle inspired by the beauty of all things wintery and frozen.

 

Smallfoot Movie at Inman Library (Monday, January 14, 2019, 3:30 – 4:30pm)  Join us to watch the new movie “Smallfoot” rated PG. This program is open to kids ages 5-11.

 

Afterschool Fun: Meet Makerbot Miles at Pacolet Library  (Monday, January 14, 2019, 3 – 4pm)  Interested in learning about 3D printing? Drop in after school to meet Miles the Makerbot. You’ll learn how he works and have an opportunity to request your own 3D prints. This program is for children in grades 1st to 5th.

 

Lego Block Party at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Monday, January 14, 2019, 4:30 – 5:30pm)  Tired of stepping on Lego Blocks at home for days and days after playing with them? Join us for our Lego Block Party! With over 55 pounds of Lego blocks the possibilities are endless and it is our mess to clean up. There will be a special area for those under the age of 5.

Let’s Build Lego Snow Castles at Cowpens Library  (Tuesday, January 15, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Join us for Lego Snow Castle building fun to kick off the new year! This program is for ages 5k- 4th grades. Refreshments will be served.

January 18

Movie in the Mill: Frozen (Friday January 18, 6:00 pm-8:00 pm) The cold may not have bothered Elsa, but we don’t want you to freeze! Join us inside The Grand Hall in Drayton Mill’s event center as we enjoy Disney’s beloved Frozen. Free popcorn and snow cones will be provided by Impact. Frozen-inspired costumes are welcomed and encouraged!

 

January 19

Hub City Farmers’ Market Winter Harvest (Saturday January 19, 9:00 am-12:00 pm) Head to Ciclops Cidery and Brewery for the Hub City Farmers’ Market Winter Harvest. Same great vendors, warmer location! Hub City Kids will be here this week with fun activities for the kids! Save the dates for the three pop up markets this winter! January 19, February 16, and March 16.

 

Barnes and Noble Storytime Featuring The Duchess and Guy: A Rescue-to-Royalty Puppy Love Story (Saturday January 19,  11:00 AM)  When he was a pup, Guy was just like any dog in the shelter dreaming of a forever home, but all that changed when Meghan adopted him. Inspired by the true story of Meghan Markle and her rescue dog, Guy.

Dino-Mite Morning Preschool Camp at TCMU-Spartanburg (Monday January 21, 9:00 am-12:00 pm) Calling all dinosaur lovers! Preschoolers will enjoy a morning filled with dino-themed fun. Led by our educators, children will engage in dinosaur stories, create crafts to take home, interact with other children through sensory play, and explore in the museum during guided exhibit play time.

**Children must be potty trained and comfortable separating from their caregivers. A morning snack will be provided. Hub City Empty Bowls First Bowl Making Session (Monday January 21, 10:00 am-12:00 pm and 1:00 pm-3:00 pm) Hub City Empty Bowls’ first bowl-making event of 2019 will be at Wofford College in Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts on Monday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public. All materials and instruction provided at no cost. All ages and abilities welcome. No experience needed. Parking available at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. Bowls will be fired and used to raise funds to feed those in need in Spartanburg County. More Information

Tin Can Snow Man at Boiling Springs Library  (Thursday, January 24, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Wish your snowman could never melt? Create your own frosty pal out of recycled cans and craft supplies. It’s going to be snow much fun!

 

Character Night at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Thursday, January 24, 2019, 6:30 – 7:30pm)  Dress as your favorite book character night at the Cyrill-Westside Library.

 

January 26

 

Barnes and Noble Storytime Featuring Pig the Pug (Saturday January 26, 11:00 AM)  Pig is a greedy and selfish Pug who has so many toys, yet he refuses to share with his poor friend Trevor. Little does he know that being greedy has its consequences. Will Pig learn to share?

 

January 25

 

Homeschool Rocks at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Friday, January 25, 2019, 1:30 – 2:30pm)Join us as we learn about different rocks and geological features, especially those you might find in South Carolina. We will have fun hands-on activities as we learn about rocks. Sign up required.
