What’s Happening in Spartanburg this Month?

February 1

 

Homeschool Valentine’s Day Crafts and Party at Cyrill-Westside Library (Friday, February 1, 2019, 1:30 – 2:30pm)  Homeschool kids ages 5 to 12 will have an opportunity to enjoy some Valentine’s crafts and card making. Sign up required.

 

Kids Class at Paint it Up! (Friday February 1, 6:00pm-8:00pm) Head to Paint it Up for their Kids Class. Choose from a pre-sketched Valentine’s Dog or conversation hearts. You choose your colors! Cost is $10 and covers everything that you need to paint.  Register here

 

Open Mic Night for High School Students at Hub City BookShop (Friday February 1, 7:00-8:00pm) Hub City Bookshop is hosting an open mic 7 p.m. the first Friday of every month for local high school students! Please bring up to three original pieces (no more than 3 minutes long). There will be a galley (free books!) give away to all participants.

 

February 2

 

Build a Candy Heart Box at Home Depot  (Saturday February  2, 9am-12:00pm) Head to the nearest Home Depot for a hands-on workshop to build a personalized candy heart box. Your child can personalize the box with paint and stickers. The activity is FREE and each child receives a certificate of achievement, an apron, and a pin while supplies last! Recommended ages 5-12. Honey Bears Sensory Storytime at Headquarters Library  (Saturday, February 2, 2019, 10 – 11am)  Honey Bears – “A sensory experience with a lot of love.” Honey Bears meets the first Saturday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. For children birth to 12 years old. We merge a traditional storytime within a sensory learning enviornment. Our goal is to enhance sensory learning through reading, singing of songs, chants and rhymes along with interactive sensory play. This program will support families and build social connections in a safe, public setting.

 

Spartanburg Science Center Owl Prowl (Saturday February 2, 7:00-8:00pm) Hike the Cottonwood Trail with Dr. Jon Storm from USC-Upstate. Hear owls and frogs in their natural habitat! $5 per person; $3 for Science Center members. Space is limited; call the Science Center to reserve your spot! (864) 583-2777. Spartanburg Art Museum’s FAMILY FUNDAYS: DIY VALENTINE’S DAY PRINTS (Sunday February 3, 1:00-4:00 (Drop in)) Make custom monoprint Valentine’s (or Galentine’s) Day cards for all your friends and family! No two prints are identical so each card is unique! Yeah

 

Workshop is located in the SAM 2D studio on the second floor, East Wing, Chapman Cultural Center. All materials and supplies included. $5 per person

 

Sundays Unplugged at Chapman Cultural Center (Sunday February 3, 1-5 pm) Chapman- Cultural Center is open every Sunday afternoon, 1-5 p.m., to provide casual and cultural experiences for those who want to “unplug.” Spartanburg Art Museum, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, The John F. Green Spartanburg Science Center and the Student Galleries are all open with free admission. In addition, one or more local musicians will perform a free mini-concert at no charge 2-4 p.m.

 

February 4

 

Black History Month Art Quilt at Inman Library (Monday, February 4, 2019, 3:30 – 4:30pm)  Join us as we learn about the Civil Rights Movement and create a scene or portrait of an activist to attach to our library’s quilt. All ages will be participating in the quilt. No sewing is required. This program is open to kids ages 5-11.

 

Monday Fun Day: Valentine’s Day at Cyrill-Westside Library (Monday, February 4, 2019, 4:30 – 5:30pm)  We will be making Valentine’s Day crafts and have themed activities.

 

February 5

 

Bestie Bracelets at Cowpens Library (Tuesday, February 5, 2019, 4 – 5pm)

We will provide a variety of beads and other material for you to make a bracelet for yourself and a matching one for your best friend, parent, teacher, or anyone that you love. Snacks will be provided. This program is for children ages 5k- 4th grades.

 

Family Night Out: Chinese New Year at Headquarters Library  (Tuesday, February 5, 2019, 7 – 8pm)  Celebrate the new lunar calendar year with paper lanterns, fortune cookies and stories with friends. Families with children ages 0-9 are welcome.

Afterschool Explorers: Let’s Build an Igloo at Headquarters Library  (Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Let’s chill and build a cool igloo.

 

February 7

 

Chinese New Year Craft Celebration at Boiling Springs Library  (Thursday, February 7, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Ring in the Chinese New Year with your own dragon puppet. Learn the history behind the importance of the dragon and experience the culture and traditions of a new year.

 

Legos and More at Headquarters Library  (Thursday, February 7, 2019, 3 – 4pm)  Drop in to build with Legos and other materials. (Ages 4-12)

 

February 8

 

Parent’s Night Out at TCMU-Spartanburg (February 8, 2019 from 5:30-9:30pm)  Parents of kids ages 3-7 – enjoy a Valentine’s date while your kids play and explore in the museum! Kids will make Valentine’s crafts, play in the museum, and eat dinner.  Children must arrive between 5:30pm and 6:15pm. Pick-up is between 8:30-9:30pm. Dinner is provided. Children with allergies must bring their own food. Children must be potty-trained and be able to easily separate from a caregiver.  Members: $20 first child/$15 per additional sibling  Non-members: $25 first child/$20 per additional sibling. Spartanburg Parks Ties and Tiaras Daddy Daughter Dance @ Cleveland Park Event Center (Friday, February 8th 6pm) It’s back again this year and it’s bigger and better than ever! We’re adding a photo booth and a candy bar!  You’re invited to join us for an evening of father-daughter fun that includes dinner and dancing at Cleveland Park!  Just think of the wonderful memories you and the little lady in your life will make… Memories you’ll cherish for years to come!  Tickets are just $25 and include dinner, followed by dessert from Abbott’s Frozen Custard. Each event tests the versatility of the athletes as they go head-to-head in seven different competitions driving three different vehicles — Monster Jam trucks, Monster Jam Speedsters and Monster Jam ATVs. These athletes battle for points in challenging Racing and Freestyle events that push themselves and their machines to the limit. Super Terrific Crafty Funtime: Valentine’s Day Cards at Landrum Library  (Saturday, February 9, 2019, 10am – 1pm) We will be making Valentine’s Day Cards. All materials provided. Drop in for some crafty fun.

 

Sensory Friendly Museum Days at TCMU-Spartanburg (Saturday, February 9 from 9am-10:30am)  Therapy dog and sensory friendly story times are designed for children with special sensory needs, sensory processing differences, and other special needs. Once a month, children will be encouraged to explore the museum, partake in programming, and engage with our staff in an inclusive and comfortable environment.

Owl prowl on the Cottonwood Trail (Saturday February 9, 7:00pm) Join SPACE and the Spartanburg Science Center for an Owl Prowl with Dr. Jonathan Storm and our friends at Spartanburg Area Conservancy (SPACE).  Hike with us as we hear owls and frogs in their natural habitat. Adults $3 and kids 12 and under free. Be sure to bring a flashlight and enter at Cottonwood Trail Beechwood Drive Trailhead. Paper Valentine Tree at Inman Library  (Monday, February 11, 2019, 3:30 – 4:30pm)  Join us to create a paper heart tree for Valentine’s Day! This program is for kids age 5-11.

 

Lego Block Party at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Monday, February 11, 2019, 4:30 – 5:30pm)  Tired of stepping on Lego Blocks at home for days and days after playing with them? Join us for our Lego Block Party! With over 55 pounds of Lego blocks the possibilities are endless and it is our mess to clean up. There will be a special area for those under the age of 5.

Family Night Out: Light Up Your Valentine at Headquarters Library  (Tuesday, February 12, 2019, 7 – 8pm)  Make someone’s Valentine’s Day a little brighter with an LED greeting card. Bring your own Valentine or make one here. Families with children ages 0-9 are welcome.

 

February 13

 

Family Storytime Puppet Show @ Cyrill-Westside Library  (Wednesday, February 13, 2019, 3:30 – 4:30pm)  A family storytime featuring a puppet show. After the show we will have a craft and interactive playtime.

 

Afterschool Explorers: Pre-Valentine’s Day Celebration at Headquarters Library  (Wednesday, February 13, 2019, 4 – 5pm)  Celebrate the day before Valentine’s Day with crafts, games and goodies.

 

February 14

 

Black History Month: Blast From the Past! At Cowpens Library  (Thursday, February 14, 2019, 11am – 12pm)  Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with a special guest presentation from the Civil War era. This event is open to elementary and tween aged children and their families. Refreshments will be served.

Freestyle Craft Night at Cyrill-Westside Library (Thursday, February 14, 2019, 6:30 – 7:30pm)  Enjoy a night of open ended crafts.

City of Spartanburg Outdoor Adventure Club (Friday February 15, 2:00-4:00 pm)

Anyone ages 11-17 come out and participate in some fun outdoor activities! Activities include all things outdoors such as hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, team challenges, archery, intro to camping and more! This club will utilize half days and no school days for outings. President’s Day Morning Preschool Camp at TCMU-Spartanburg  (Monday, February 18, 2019 9am-12pm)  Calling all future Presidents! Preschoolers will enjoy a morning filled with red, white and blue-themed fun. Led by our early childhood educators, children will engage in silly stories, art experiences and a science experiment, plus interact with other children through sensory play, and explore the museum during guided exhibit play time. We’ll even have a mini election!

Children must be potty trained and comfortable separating from their caregivers. A morning snack will be provided. Children with allergies or food sensitivities are asked to bring their own snack.

Macaroni Monuments at Inman Library  (Monday, February 18, 2019, 3:30 – 4:30pm)  Join us this Presidents’ Day to create a famous monument using macaroni. This program is open to kids ages 5-11.

 

Paint Party at Cyrill-Westside Library  (Monday, February 18, 2019, 4:30 – 5:30pm)  Join us for a paint party where we will explore a variety of different ways to paint.

Maker Fest at TCMU-Spartanburg (Saturday, February 23 from 10:00am-4:00pm)  Open Call for Marvelous Makers:  Created by Makers to celebrate fellow Makers, Maker Fest is a community forum for you to share your creations with the local Spartanburg community.

We want to highlight the Spartanburg Maker Community’s amazing craft and ingenuity, and we want you to be a part of it! Whether your craft is robotics, photography, recycled art, musical instruments, animation, woodworking, or none of the above, you are invited to apply to participate in our 5th annual Maker Fest.

Buggy Craft Night at Cyrill-Westside Library (Thursday, February 28, 2019, 6:30 – 7:30pm)  Beautiful butterflies or slimy creepy crawlers, what kind of bugs are you going to make?
